LiDAR 3D Aerial Scanning for Surveying Applications

The New Riegl’s VUX-1UAV LiDAR Sensor Sees More Than Meets the Eye

The newest Advanced Technologies addition to the Allen & Company’s in-house resources is ready to deliver exceptional value for our customers in job sites with all types of terrain

The Riegl VUX-1UAV LiDAR sensor is a powerful surveying and mapping tool designed to meet the most demanding customer requests. When mounted on Harris Aerial’s most sophisticated UAVs for commercial applications—the Carrier H6 drone—this LiDAR device from Riegl can deliver the most effective customer solutions to date.

Rated with a 10-milimeter survey-grade accuracy, this Riegl LiDAR sensor boasts ultra-fast scanning speeds—up to 200 scans per second—and a measurement rate of up to 500,000 measurements per second.

The large storage capacity of the Riegl VUX-1UAV allows it to capture up to 240 GB on a solid-state drive. For missions where data needs to be broadcast live, the Riegl LiDAR system also uses a LAN-TCP/IP interface capable of live-streaming from the air.

With an operating flight ceiling within the established 400-foot ceiling, the Harris Carrier H6/Riegl LiDAR combo also provides a scanning field of view of up to 330° with virtually an unrestricted capacity to acquire ground data.

Allen & Company’s aerial mapping is part of our Advanced Technology surveying division, which focuses on employing a variety of high-tech tools and resources—all designed to produce the best results and deliverables for our customers.

This UAV and LiDAR scanning ensemble gives us the ability to collect survey-grade datasets in:

  • As-builts in construction and development work sites
  • Roadways and other infrastructure assets
  • Power lines, pipelines and other utilities
  • Parcels with abundant vegetation

For Allen & Company, the Riegl LiDAR system can produce a complete dataset in a matter of hours. In contrast, using conventional surveying techniques it could easily take up to two weeks to survey the same area with an entire crew.

In addition, the opportunity to use a UAV with LiDAR reduces many risks associated with ground-based surveying—from having to weather the elements to comply with safety regulations as established by company standards to ensure safety in hazardous environments.

Last, the Riegl VUX-1UAV LiDAR sensor applications range from urban environments and construction site scanning to forestry, archeology, agricultural and cultural heritage preservation—such as historic buildings and landmarks.

Allen & Company’s LiDAR-equipped UAV gives us unobstructed access to large tracts of land with diverse topography, allowing us to scan thoroughly and produce the deliverables that allow our company to remain in the forefront of our industry.
