In his role as Director of Subsurface Utility Exploration (S.U.E.), Shawn Maturo offers an optimal blend of traditional surveying and S.U.E. knowledge, which creates a perfect fit as Allen & Company continues to evolve into the opportunity of industrial and commercial needs requiring subsurface surveying. Shawn’s ability to efficiently complete each project started with a prior 17-year career as a Survey Crew Chief—and one that granted him the in-depth insight to resolve many issues with ownership and accountability.
It was while working as a Survey Crew Chief that the opportunity to transition to S.U.E. operations became the long-awaited chance for Shawn to use his strong foundation to evolve his career into this field. Dedicated to learning what it would take to thoroughly investigate underground utilities, he not only became proficient, but also excelled to become Allen & Company’s resident expert in the S.U.E. competency.
The S.U.E. Operations Team at Allen & Company works with clients to locate utilities lines and assets to ensure the safe excavation during a project. By accurately locating utilities or determining an area to be clear of utilities for the placement of poles and other new utilities, Shawn can help clients minimize the risks associated with any potential discrepancies or disruption of utilities service to existing customers. Careful and detailed sketches of all survey and S.U.E. are tenets of Shawn’s dedicated service in this role.
Shawn’s responsibilities at Allen & Company include the supervision and training of Field Crews, Project Management and Client Contact. He has developed exceptional organizational skills to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of completed projects.
Understanding that utilities are a critical part of any design project, Shawn applies his expertise in the application of state-of-the-art S.U.E. locating equipment—such as ground penetrating radar, RF locators, etc.—as well as vacuum/hydro excavation. His experience covers a variety of surveying and SUE projects for the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Turnpike Enterprise, Orlando Orange Expressway Authority, and foreign entities, as well as city and county governments and private clients across Central Florida.
